IT'S MORNING NOW...OR IS IT???


Well, I am sure it's morning somewhere out there as I write this. Just not where I am - it's dinner time. My husband just came home from work and asked me what I wanted to eat. My first thought was oatmeal. Yes, oatmeal. A perfectly reasonable food to want at 7pm.


Many people end up getting too much sleep at times and, contrary to popular opinion, it is not simply because they are "lazy". Often it is due to a medical condition that may be wiping out their energy and they simply need the extra sleep in order to replenish it. That's right - legitimate reasons to support the actions of the "lazy" people you know.


Depression and other sleep disorders ~ Sleep disorders such as sleep apnea or narcolepsy can create a need for sleep during the day. And while some people suffering from depression find it hard to fall asleep at all, others can't seem to get enough.


Medication Anti-psychotic and anti-seizure medications are definitely huge culprits in causing the body to want more rest.


Chronic pain conditions ~ Often with chronic pain, people just want a break from it. And our bodies will use what little energy we may have to combat the pain/injury we are dealing with. Sometimes sleep is difficult due to the pain itself; other times people suffering from chronic pain can't seem to get enough rest. And this may also be impacted by the other causes of sleepiness, so you are getting a double or even triple whammy.

Whatever your reason for needing additional sleep, it is definitely not as much fun as it my appear to an outsider. We pay for it greatly, in losing time with friends and family, losing hours in which we could have been productive, in so many ways it's hard to even list them all. But every day brings fresh hope where we can get more out of our day than sleep. Laughter would be cool as well.
